Maternity Leave

Even though I have had so much fun working with the kids I am so sad to say that I won't be able to complete all of my Service Learning hours due to the fact that my son is said to be here earlier than expected (yayyy). Neway I plan on writing all about my experience with adopt a school. The good the bad and the ugly , DU DU DUNNNNNNNN lol. I will even post my parer just so you guys can get the full story of what happened during my time with the kids and the teachers. A LOT of juicy stuff will be included as well (you don't wanna miss it!!). Again I will be sure to post all the exciting things that went down that day. Until then keep making a difference in the world and I will do the same. WISH ME LUCK ON MY NEW JOURNEY INTO MOTHERHOOD =)

Camp Winona

Today I will be going into a few of the fifth grade classes to talk to them about camp Winona. At the end of every year the fifth graders get to go over night to a summer camp located in Deland, FL. A few of the teachers have some students that are "acting out" and they feel if the kids hear how fun camp is it will give them a reason to behave. I will speak about my experiences at camp and I will also allow students to ask me questions. Each visit will only take 15mins or less. As promised I am attaching a link so that you can see for yourself just how cool camp Winona is

To camp or not to camp????

Okay so my training is officially over yayyy meee!!!  Monday the 19th marked my first official day I spent 1 hour helping. I haven't been assigned to one particular class, in fact I bounced around from class to class that day. The highlight of my day was when I was invited into one of my old teachers classrooms to talk to her 5th graders about the annual end of the year camping trip. We all laughed as I told them about my experience and I even got them excited about their trip. At the end of the day I was asked if I would be interested in coming on the camping trip as a supervisor. I still have to think about that lol after all I'll be a new mommie soon!!!
PS I can't remember the name of the camping ground, but I will be sure to find out and post a link for you guys to see for yourselves just how amazing it is.

first day jitters

Okay so due to some meetings that my trainer had my training day was pushed back to the 16th. Which was okay with me. Neway I met up with Mrs. Howard Friday and she walked me through the some of the things I will be doing with some of the classes for my first day. At first it was a little intimidating, but I have a few days left for training so I will be well prepared for my first day. I will be helping a few of the teachers with daily activities such as; taking the kids to lunch and recces, passing out supplies, cleaning up the classrooms, and even helping with the art classes. The meeting was 2 hours long  and I continue with my training and volunteer work tomorrow, bright and early. Night Night bloggers!!!

SLP

WST3500
Adopt a School

For this project I will be volunteering my time at an inner city school. Due to the tremendous cut backs I will be assigned to a specific class where I will help the teacher; prepare lessons, grade, papers, clean up, and anything else that he or she may need help with. This project is targeting age and ethnicity.
This project will be done through the elementary school. I always been about giving back to the children of the community and helping mainly in the education systems in our communities. So far I have been given  the contact information to the director of this program (I am still waiting on a response form her) I am said to start Nov7th until I choose to stop. The community that this elementary school is in is the same community I grew up in. It's not the best community especially when it comes to the youth. Children are exposed to drugs, prostitution, and criminal activity (most of which goes on directly across the street for the school). I feel like by me alleviating some of the pressure off of the teachers they can focus on actually teaching their students. I also feel that I would be a good role model for these children in letting them know that just because we come form this neighborhood doesn't mean our life and dreams have to be limited.

I will be working as an individual on this project, and my goals are one to help my former teachers (my way of paying them back for some of the class clowning I use to do =) ). My second goal is to help the parents of them community, I want them to be reassured that their children are receiving a good education. My last and most important goal is to be a role model to the children of my former school and show them that I came from where they are, I sat in the same seats and lived in the same hood and I still had the same opportunity to go to college and get a very good education, and have a good paying job and explore and do new things.

This course is about getting involved with our community and being a positive active member and I truly believe that me being able to help with the youth of my old community will do just that.
